Queen, I’m coming to you today with a very special guest. It’s the one and only Brit Morin of the Brit + Co, a media company that inspires creativity in all areas of life. Brit is a business mogul, a mom, a great friend, and a truly creative soul.
Today she shares how she got the nickname “Silicon Valley’s Martha Stewart”, why creativity is such a big part of her life, and how to have it all without being overstressed. We also talk about being a mom, fun media appearances, Instagram challenges…
Brit has also just started a venture fund to raise $100 million. Talk about dreaming big! She shares how she got over the fear and why she finds it so important to invest in women-backed businesses.
How Brit Found Her Creative Spark Very Young
When she was little, Brit would buy different things on sale and stitch them up in creative ways. She would end up with a much cuter product. Even then, it was clear she was a crafty, out-of-the-box, creative thinker.
At the same time, Brit loved technology and media. As a teenager, she fell in love with computer science and promptly set her eyes on Silicon Valley. In 2005, she started working for Apple in iTunes. She spent several years in Google and Youtube too. The one thing she noticed there is that many searches were “how-to” searches, and they mostly came from women. The content offered sucked, so Brit knew she had to offer something creative and fun to all the women who wanted this content.
This is the spark that created Brit + Co. Today, almost 10 years later, they’ve done over 65,000 pieces of content, videos, articles, podcasts, books, and courses.
The Story of How Brit + Co Was Born
The thing is, you don’t generally leave Google unless you plan to start your own tech company. So at the beginning, Brit had a plan to make apps for cooking, interior design, weddings… They made the content website to support the apps, but in the end, the audience demanded more content!
Everyone wanted more DIY tutorials and at the same time, Pinterest appeared online. As an early adopter, Brit jumped onto this new platform. Since her brand was so visual and creative, it took off in no time. After the first year, Brit and her team decided to focus on content rather than apps.
That’s how Brit unexpectedly found herself at the center of a multi-million dollar media empire.
Talking Big Money, Investments, and Venture Capital
When it comes to feelings of unworthiness, many women believe they’re not meant to play with big bucks. But as we break through those chains, we can look to Queens who are crushing it in big leagues.
Brit’s new business goal is to raise a $100 million venture fund. Scared? Yes. Will she give up? Of course not.
The fact is, there are less than 10% of women who have ever started a big venture fund for tech investments. Not only is she a woman, but Brit is also just 34. And while these odds seem to be against her, Brit pushes through because she has a strong vision.
Raising money at that level is psychologically exhausting, but doing it for a great cause makes the whole process easier. Brit is staying on this path because she believes she can make a great contribution to the field.
By investing in mainly female founders and female-oriented products and services, Brit wants to be a part of making women’s lives better. She wants to take her game one step higher and have a larger impact in the world so women everywhere can enjoy a better life.
And when unworthiness, disbelief, or doubt appear, Brit remembers her mission and the negativity fades away.
How to Reach a Bigger Audience and Spread the Word
It takes a long time to build an audience, but at the same time, it only starts with one person. And if what you’re offering is valuable to one person, it’s likely valuable to more. It’s all about finding those people.
The secret to growing an audience comes down to the viral coefficient. If one person shares your content with three more people, and each of those three people shares with three more, boom, you’ve gone viral.
There are so many ways to do that, but the one that seems to be most popular is tapping into emotion. If something makes you laugh, you will probably share it. If something provokes nostalgia or anger, it’s also more likely to be shared.
As someone who wants to reach bigger masses, ask yourself what are the emotions you’re able to provoke? And while you’re at it, remember that nothing is built overnight. But, Brit promises that if you’re on the path you’re meant to be on and you continue to walk forward, you will most definitely get there.
The thing about doing business the feminine way is that we don’t have to do it alone. Your business growth is not meant to be an isolated journey. We grow and expand when we include our community and get in that “let’s do this together” mentality.
